I've been doing portraits for more than thirty years. I prefer to work from photographs out of convenience. Photo portraits are also great for recapturing the past. A 15-year-old baby photo, used for a new portrait, is like taking a trip in a time machine without running the risk of altering the time/space continuum.
I take particular pride in the fact that I am able to accurately capture the likeness of any subject. In 2003 I started a new phase of realism in which I erase and redraw sections of portraits and other drawings that didn't meet my personal standards of perfection. (I refer to this as my "War of Art" period.) This redrawing and concentration of detail can take several additional hours, delaying final completion by more than a week, compared to the style I employed prior to 2003. Ultimately, the finished artwork is of significantly higher quality.
