I was inspired to begin working on the concept of FISTS IN THE AIR in 1985, after only a few months of creating panel cartoons. I'd thought that I had a decent book idea and I was combining my cartoons with my love of hard rock and heavy metal. I was truly a novice and didn't know the first thing about cartooning, let alone writing a book and shopping it around to publishers. I had no idea how to write a thorough outline or even a decent cover letter. I did manage to send a copy to the late B. Kliban before he passed away. His reply is quite amusing. The book idea eventually morphed into a short-lived comic strip called Jimmy Riff.
