The meeting was called to order at 6:22 p.m. with a quorum present.

The Committee reviewed the policy ILBAA-1, High School Competency Assessments.  Several changes were discussed. The Committee wanted to consider a change to the policy from a B, and the number of credits allowed under this option. It was suggested to change the grade of B to 80, and to only to allow two credits per year for a total of 8 credits, under this policy.

Mrs. Warren moved, second by Mrs. Grassie, to recommend to the Board the above changes for the first reading of policy ILBAA-1, High School Competency Assessments. The motion passed unanimously.

The Committee discussed policy JECA, Determining Residency and would like to add the following statement:  All newly registered students will have their residency verified and complete the residency affidavit, JECA-1.

Mrs. Warren moved, second by Mrs. Grassie, to recommend to the Board for first reading policy JECA-1, Residency Affidavit. The motion passed unanimously.

The Committee reviewed the proposal from Mr. Hopkins related to the Red Raider symbol. The discussion involved reviewing the proposed language and a recommendation to add a code of conduct related to the symbol. The code of conduct would include: not allowing anyone to dress like an American Indian, not allowing the use of the tomahawk chop, and the review of who uses the symbol.

The Committee discussed how to set up a forum for accepting thoughts about the symbol. The Committee decided that any policy or change required further review.

The key questions that the High School faculty and students will be asked to discuss are:

  • Is the symbol something we should change?
  • How do we respectfully use the symbol?
  • Can we respectfully use the symbol?

An inventory of the locations of the symbol will be compiled.

Mrs. Warren moved, second by Mr. DeVito, to adjourn the meeting at 7:20 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.

Respectfully submitted,
Mrs. Jae Duntley
