Spaulding High School's "Red Raider" symbol debated

PORTSMOUTH HERALD (Seacoastonline.com) – Associated Press

ROCHESTER, N.H. — School officials are debating the future of a high school emblem that depicts a Native American.

Schools superintendent Mike Hopkins worries the "Red Raider" symbol—which shows an American Indian man's face in profile—could spark a civil rights complaint in the future.

But school board members are divided over whether to keep the symbol, which has been used for decades.

Two board members want to retire the Red Raider, but the majority want to keep it. Some board members say they don't have a problem with the symbol as long as it is used respectfully.

The board plans to convene a public forum to gather input before making a decision.
