No more racist Indian mascots

WLC School Board Meeting Minutes October 10, 2007

Mascot Survey

Ms. Linda Kalloger, Social Studies department chair, was present to deliver the results of a student/parent-community survey conducted with respect to the school mascot. Her department accepted the role of conduit for mascot discussions/deliberations as a result of a request from Mr.Ebel. Students were polled in advisories; parents and community members were given surveys at Open House.

Responses to the question, “Do you think using the WLC Warrior as our logo is offensive?” were as follows: Students: Yes-6; No-294. Parents/community results: Yes-3; No-182. Several respondents had provided additional commentary. Ms. Kalloger had also been contacted by an Abenaki warrior living nearby, who supported retaining the mascot. In response to a question from Ms. Scagel, Ms. Kalloger indicated the survey process had generated much thoughtful discussion, and verified to Mr. Lewis that the department is considering offering courses in diversity and cultural awareness.

Mr. Lynch asked about next steps for the board. Ms. Scagel felt that the issue isn’t dead because of the survey. She will meet with Ms. Kalloger to see what might come next, e.g., an assembly. The NH Board of Education has issued a resolution seeking to have Native American mascots in NH schools retired. She would like to examine why this position was taken and review other research. Generating discussion and encouraging cultural awareness activities within the school to expand was determined to be good course of action.
