Aegina Press, Incorporated 1905 Madison Avenue Huntingon, West Virginia 2504 Ira Herman, Managing Editor (304) 429-7204 Fax (304) 429-7234 [Month Day,] 1998 Dear [Agent]: I am not an author writing to seek agency representation or publication for my own work. But, I believe I have a program that will benefit you and your clients. In all probability, most of the manuscripts that you receive are not suitable for royalty publishing. Instead of rejecting them or merely offering critique and editorial services, why not also offer them the option of publication, marketing, and order-fulfillment? You will earn a nice commission in the process, a potential commission of $600 or more on each manuscript you are now sending back. For the past thirteen years, I have owned and operated Aegina Press. I established it to publish books on both a royalty and subsidy basis. I designed a publishing program meant to actually increase a new writer's career chances, not to merely sooth his ego. I wanted something better than "self-publishing," something more than the substandard product and marketing that usually result. I designed a budget-conscious publishing and marketing plan for beginning professionals. I wanted professional production at reasonable cost, with marketing that was realistic and effective. All of the money from sales went to the authors, who made a profit if their books did well. I published royalty titles, so that we would not be known as just a subsidy press. I reprinted at my own expense subsidized titles that were selling. I published fiction and even poety by unknowns, on a royalty basis. Since 1984, we have published over seven hundred titles. All have been listed in Books in Print. We've worked hard to establish a reputation for honesty and reliablity. Some of our authors have published four or five titles with us. We have never had to print a book twice because of an error we made. No one has ever sued us. That's because we do what we say, and we say what we do. Instead of returning manuscripts, submit them to us. If we sign a contract with your client to publish his book, we will pay you, for your services in preparing the manuscript and providing a brief author bio, compensation equal to 15 percent of the total we receive for publication. The 15 percent will never be less than $600., and it will be paid on signing. That will make it worthwhile. It will also cover postage and copying on unsuccessful submissions. We can provide self-addressed, postage-paid "clearance cards," so that an author may approve the idea of his manuscript being submitted to us. So, if a manuscript is inappropriate for a royalty marketing effort, or if the royalty houses are not a further option, submitting the manuscript to us creates money-making potential for you and the author. We will handle all correspondence and negotiations with the authors, with copies of everything to you. You can track (if you wish) which submissions have resulted in signed contracts. If you don't want to be bothered by following the correspondnece, you don't have to. Just file it away or tell us to stop sending copies. The manuscripts we like best are novels or short story or poetry collections of 100-500 manuscript pages. We have also published children's books of 200 words and manuscripts of 1000 pages. Our company has recently updated its business rating with Dun & Bradstreet. Please give me a call if you want to discuss this, or if you want me to send a supply of author-clearance cards. The cards can be customized to your needs, or you may prefer to obtain the clearance on your own letterhead. If so, you can use the text of our permission form or something similar. Of course, you may already know of authors who are not adverse to subsidized publishing. If you would like to see them do it correctly, send us their manuscripts. If you do, please let me know, so that we can watch for yours. Thanks. Sincerely, Ira Herman
